Want to show the world you’re serious about your professional development and career?

Log in to the member portal to apply for one of our professional membership categories – Certified (CFMANZ), Member (MFMANZ) or Associate (AFMANZ). For an overview of membership categories and eligibility requirements, click here.

Our entry-level Affiliate membership is perfect for suppliers and those new to the industry, but if you’ve been working in FM for more than two years (or one year with an FM qualification), we encourage you to apply for the membership category commensurate with your skills and experience.

Once approved, you can start using your post-nominal to demonstrate to employers, clients and colleagues that you’re serious about your professional development, dedicated to industry best practices and committed to leading the FM profession.

See below for more information on the categories and some FAQs.

Certified Membership (CFMANZ)

Certified membership (CFMANZ)  is the highest level of membership offered by FMANZ and the pinnacle of FM professionalism in New Zealand. To become a Certified member you must be an experienced FM professional with a recognised tertiary qualification or have been in the industry for at least 10 years if you don’t have a university qualification. For an overview of membership categories and eligibility criteria, click here.

Note: Corporate staff members can apply for Associate (AFMANZ) and Member (MFMANZ) categories, but if you would like to apply for Certified membership (CFMANZ) you will need to sign up as an individual member.

To become a Certified member you will need to be able to demonstrate to the Board that you have a level of experience, knowledge and skill that qualifies you for accreditation based on the professional competency framework.

To begin the process you must be able to prove (with relevant documentation) that you qualify in one of the following ways:

  • You have an accredited specialised postgraduate degree and four years’ FM experience; OR
  • You have an accredited postgraduate degree and five years’ FM experience; OR
  • You have an accredited undergraduate qualification and seven years’ FM experience; OR
  • You have NCEA (or equivalent secondary school education) and 10 years’ FM experience.

Given the kudos of Certified membership, the application process is more involved than for other categories. You need to complete the application form, responding to a selection of four questions from the 13 competencies outlined in the Professional Competency Framework. Once your written submission has been assessed as competent, your work will be reviewed and you will be interviewed by two Certified members to verify your submission and assess your professionalism.

Have a read of the Submission Guide. This contains a lot of helpful information.

There are three intakes per year for Certified membership: 1 March, 1 June and 1 September.

NOTE: Continued annual membership benefits are dependent on Certified members attaining a minimum of 20 CPD points in two out of three years. Find out more.

Benefits of Certified Membership

Being recognised as having reached the pinnacle of professionalism in New Zealand is the greatest benefit of Certified membership. How do I know which category to apply for?

Take a look at the eligibility requirements here. If you’re still unsure, email assessment@fmanz.org for clarification. I am a supplier of goods and services to the FM industry, but don't work as a facilities manager. Can I apply for professional membership?

Generally speaking, you will need to be working as an FM professional to be eligible for our Associate, Member or Certified membership categories. Most suppliers enjoy Affiliate membership. Affiliate membership is suitable for anyone who has an interest in FM, has just entered the industry or is supplying goods and services to FM professionals. Previous experience in facilities management is not required and no assessment is needed.

I am a corporate staff member - can I apply to be assessed into a membership category?

Yes, corporate staff members can apply up to Member level (MFMANZ) via the member portal. If you want to become a Certified member, you will need to join as an individual member (and pay the individual annual membership fee) in order to be assessed.

What is the CPD programme and points system and is participation compulsory for members?

FMANZ’s annual CPD programme is a tailored programme of learning aligned to our professional competency framework. Members accrue CPD points for a variety of activities, including seminars, webinars, FM Summit, workshops, professional reading, mentoring and tertiary study. One CPD point is equivalent to approximately one hour of learning. You can see how many points you’ve accrued at any time by logging in to the online member portal.

While participation in the CPD programme isn’t mandatory, we encourage all members who want to advance their careers and keep their skills current to aim for a minimum of 20 CPD points per year.

  • Certified members (CFMANZ) – your status and benefits are dependent on you attaining a minimum of 20 CPD points yeo out of three years.
  • Members in other categories wanting to progress to a higher membership level should be seen to be actively participating in the CPD programme.

What are post-nominals?

Associate, Member and Certified members (and some Retired members) are entitled to use a post-nominal (letters after their name) in their email signatures, on their business cards, in their CV and so on. This post-nominal is your badge of professionalism and we encourage you to use it wherever possible. It demonstrates a commitment to your career and the FM profession, and is a recognition of your skills, experience and qualifications. Associate members can use the post-nominal AFMANZ, Members – MFMANZ, and Certified members – CFMANZ. Retired members can use the post-nominal for their membership status at the time of retirement, followed by (Retired). For example, CFMANZ (Retired).

I have been a member of FMANZ for some time but haven't applied to be assessed into a professional membership category. What category of membership do I hold?

Anyone who joined FMANZ after 1 April 2020 will have been assessed into a membership category when they signed up.

However, if you joined FMANZ before this date and haven’t applied to be assessed into a membership category, you will have automatically been allocated Affiliate membership. If your skills, qualifications and experience qualify you for a higher level of membership, we encourage you to apply for the membership category commensurate with your skills and experience in order to gain the professional recognition you deserve.

Becoming an Associate, Member or Certified member will demonstrate to your peers, employers and industry colleagues that you are serious about your professional development and FM career.
