Advance Your Career

Working to further the professionalisation of the FM industry is of paramount importance to FMANZ. That’s why our Continual Professional Development (CPD) programme is invaluable to members and the wider industry. It is your pathway to professionalism and to advancing your career. By taking part, you’ll expand your skillset, stay up to date with current trends and technologies and have your qualifications and experience rewarded. Read on to find out what the programme is and how it works or skip to the helpful FAQ section below.

What Is the CPD Programme?

Our annual CPD programme is a tailored programme of learning aligned to the 13 core skills identified in our professional competency framework. Members can accrue CPD points for a variety of FMANZ and non-FMANZ activities, including seminars, webinars, podcasts, FM Summit, conferences, workshops, professional reading, mentoring and tertiary study. One CPD point is equivalent to approximately one hour of learning.

We encourage all members to aim for a minimum of 20 CPD points per year from a range of FMANZ and non-FMANZ activities.

Note: Non-FMANZ activities must be within an FM’s scope of practice to be considered for CPD points. Look for activities that align with our professional competency framework

Who Should Take Part?

  • Certified members (CFMANZ) – your status and benefits are dependent on you attaining a minimum of 20 CPD points in two out of three years. Find out more here.
  • Associate (AFMANZ) or Professional Member (PFMANZ) – if you want to progress to a higher membership level, you should be actively participating in the programme.
  • All members – continuing professional development is essential for professionalisation of the FM industry, so staying up to date with current trends and technologies, and advancing your career is extremely important. We therefore encourage all members to aim for a minimum of 20 CPD points per year.

Our Responsibilities

  • FMANZ is committed to delivering a CPD programme that is robust, varied and meets the needs of our members at different levels. We strive to be innovative, while ensuring we’re addressing core FM competencies as outlined in our professional competency framework.
  • We’ll keep a tally of points accrued through attendance of FMANZ events, and our Professional Development Manager will assess and allocate points for any non-FMANZ activities submitted for consideration.

Your Responsibilities

  • Select from a range of FMANZ and non-FMANZ CPD activities throughout the year to attain a minimum of 20 points.
  • Register for these events and ensure you attend.
  • Provide evidence of attendance at non-FMANZ events through the online member portal. (We will automatically record your CPD points for FMANZ activities)

Accrual of Points – How it Works

FMANZ CPD activity – once you’ve participated in an FMANZ CPD activity, we’ll verify your attendance and automatically allocate points earned.

Please note if you view a recording of an FMANZ activity after the event, for example, an FMANZ webinar, you are responsible for claiming your CPD points via the member portal.

Non-FMANZ CPD activity – if the activity is not run by FMANZ, you will need to submit evidence of participation via the online member portal for approval. Evidence should include confirmation of attendance, duration, provider, and the professional competency(ies) to which the activity relates.

Points accrual – points will be applied pro-rata where members have been active for less than 12 months of a calendar year (1 January – 31 December).

We encourage participation in a range of different CPD activities, but recognise that individuals have different learning styles, and that travel, or resource constraints may limit attendance at ‘in-person’ events. However, at least 5 CPD points per year must be obtained by attending an ‘in-person’ event.

If you earn more than 20 points in 12 months, we will carry over a maximum of five points to the following year.

You can check on your points and CPD status by logging in to the member portal.

What Activities Count & How Many CPD Points Will I Earn?

You can earn CPD points from any combination of the following activities…

N.B. at least 5 CPD points must be obtained by attending an ‘in-person’ event unless an exemption is agreed with our Professional Development Manager (for example, for travel/location/resource constraints; disability or family commitments).

FMANZ Events

CPD points for FMANZ activities will automatically be added to your tally (with the exception of activities viewed after the event), but you will need to apply for CPD points for non-FMANZ activities. You can do this any time (and check your points balance) by logging in to the member portal.

Non-FMANZ Events

If the activity is not run by FMANZ, you’ll need to submit evidence of participation via the online member portal for approval. Evidence should include confirmation of attendance, duration, provider, and the professional competency(ies) to which the activity relates.

Aligned Industry Association Events

FMANZ has identified several industry associations that host learning events we consider are naturally within an FM’s scope of practice, and strongly aligned with a specific competency within our professional competency framework.

A list of these associations is available on our downloadable CPD Guide.

Non-aligned Industry Associations

Learning activities undertaken with non-aligned industry associations or private training providers must include supporting evidence of the content that demonstrates they are within an FM’s scope of practice, and strongly aligned with a specific competency in our professional competency framework to be considered for CPD points.  Allocation of CPD points for non-aligned industry associations or private training providers will be at the discretion of the Professional Development Manager.

Even if the activity is not strongly aligned to a specific competency, the Professional Development Manager, at their discretion, may consider the activity to be of professional value and still qualify for pro-rata CPD points.

FM Specific Tertiary Education

If a member is enrolled in the Massey University FM Diploma/ Post Graduate Diploma and completing at least one tertiary paper in any year, they will be able to claim a maximum of 15 CPD points per calendar year.

Other comparable FM tertiary papers may still qualify for pro-rata CPD points at the discretion of the Professional Development Manager.

Other Qualifying Activities

There are some self-directed activities that would be considered within an FM’s scope of practice and strongly aligned with a specific competency in our professional competency framework.

To qualify for CPD points, a member must include supporting evidence of the activity and a brief overview of the learning that demonstrates the alignment. Approval will be at the discretion of the Professional Development Manager.

Keeping Track of Your Points

You might find it helpful to create a register to keep track of your CPD points. Here is an example that may be of use.

Professional Learning List

Under our member-only resources, we’ve put together a learning list. If you’re looking for something to read, listen to or watch, we’ve listed some suggestions under each of our 13 professional competencies and ‘general learning’. We will be regularly adding to this list so keep checking back. And remember to record time spent reading/viewing/listening via the member portal; one hour = one CPD point.
